Let His Love Break Through

Meet Me at the Well, and Let My Love Break Through
John 4:3-42

Jesus travelled with his disciples and had to go through Samaria. Of all places. Samaria, the region avoided by the Jews.
Wearied from His long travel, Jesus stopped by a well for water. He was thirsty, yet later when His disciples urged Him to eat He told them He had food they do not know of.
Jesus waited.
Jesus waited but not just for anyone – He was waiting for one particular woman, a Samaritan, an adulteress.
The Pure One of Heaven waits and then asks her, a defiled Samaritan woman with whom Jews would not associate and especially not share dishes with, for a drink of water.
Jesus wants her attention. She gives Him her full attention. She is curious about who this man is. “Why would he ask her for water?” When she questions Him, Jesus tells her that if she really knew who He was, she would be the one asking for water and that the water He gives would cause her to never thirst again. “Oh yes! To never have to come and draw water again in the middle of the day that would be wonderful!”
It would appear that now the tables are turned. The woman is now asking Jesus for water, but yet without understanding of Who He really is and of what water He is really offering.

Well at this point, any of us with any natural bent towards human kindness would certainly respond by giving that a cup of water. Especially on a hot, sunny, dusty day. But no, Jesus instead calls her to go and get her husband. “My husband? I have no husband,” the woman replies. What does Jesus then say? He confirms that what she has said is true; that the fact of the matter is, she has had – how many? Five husbands and the one she is with now is not even her husband. Not that I blame her, if I’d had five broken marriages I would not want another.
The woman now seems to try to send the conversation on a bunny trail (but wouldn’t we, too?) by stating this: “I perceives you are a prophet – let’s talk about the correct place to worship.” Was she feeling shame inside? In the company of this Jewish man whose eyes were so kind, even as they peered intently at her. Dot, dot, dot. Conversation shifts momentarily, but even in the shift our Lord is giving instruction, speaking Truth, speaking to her heart… She finally breaks in and states to this unknown man, “I know the Messiah is coming, and when He comes, He will tell us all things.
“I who speak to you am He.”

Wow. Bombshell.

Fortunately just at that time the disciples returned and they see Jesus talking with a Samaritan woman and though they marveled at this, none questioned Him. And the woman leaves her water jug to go into the city and says to the men “come see a Man! He told me all the things I did! Could this be the Christ?!” And do you

know what? They all came. They all returned with her to the well to see this Man who might be the Christ. You see, although the Samaritans only believed in a portion of the Bible, they knew enough to know that a Messiah – the Saviour of the world, was coming. They just didn’t know anything else about Him yet. But they were waiting! Waiting for Him to come and His love to break through! As so was this woman. I would perceive that is why our Lord had to go through Samaria to wait for this woman because He knew her heart was ready to receive. And guess what – that day, His love did break through to her heart; His kindness touched her in a way she’d not yet experienced. Enough so as to return to town and call others to come and see this Man.

Now what? I’m going to close by introducing another passage only because these are some of the Scriptures have been on my heart for you and for me over the past month. John 15 verses 3 and 10.

“You are already clean because of the Word I have spoken to you.” “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” John 15:3, 10

Imagine that. Not only are we clean because of His word which washes our hearts, but we can abide in Christ in the same way that He abides in OUR (remember, we are co-heirs and co-laborers with Christ) in OUR Heavenly Father.
